The organization has custom-built the world’s third largest Hypersonic Wind Tunnel. On Ma ISRO commissioned two main facilities including a hypersonic wind tunnel and a shock tunnel at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram. After the US and Russia, this will be the world’s third largest hypersonic wind tunnel. The world’s most powerful wind tunnel at present is America’s LENX-X facility in Buffalo, New York state, which operates at speeds of up to 10 kilometres per second – 30 times the speed of sound. Hypersonic aircraft are defined as vehicles that travel at speeds of Mach 5, five times the speed of sound, or above.

HyFIE project aimed at improving the measurement techniques in hypersonic wind tunnels and comparing the experimental data provided by four major European facilities: DLR HEG and H2K, ONERA F4 and VKI Longshot. A common geometry of EXPERT body was chosen and four different models were used. A large amount of experimental data was collected and compared with the results Author: Jean-Philippe Brazier, Jan Martinez Schramm, Sébastien Paris, Thomas Gawehn, Bodo Reimann. In order to cater to the above need, Industrial type Hypersonic Wind Tunnel and Shock Tunnel have been established at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). The first phase of the facility, commissioned in , with Mach 6 system and Shock Tunnel, has been extensively utilised and tests are being carried out for the current programs of ISRO.

A hypersonic wind tunnel is designed to generate a hypersonic flow field in the working section, thus simulating the typical flow features of this flow regime - including compression shocks and pronounced boundary layer effects, entropy layer and viscous interaction zones and most importantly high total temperatures of the flow.

The speed of these tunnels vary from Mach 5 to   Catalogue of European Hypersonic Wind Tunnel Facilities. book Hypersonic Facilities Complex, originally named the Gas Dynamics Laboratory, was the NACA’s earliest installation with multiple hypersonic wind tunnels.

The various tunnels utilized air and, later, specific gasses, particularly helium and nitrogen, to investigate aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic problems in flight regimes above the speed Center: Langley Research Center.

Wind Tunnels. The Aerospace Sciences Laboratory (ASL) houses a wide range of wind tunnels are available for testing designs. The wind tunnel facilities range from hypersonic flows in a Ludwig Quiet Flow Tube to the Boeing Wind Tunnel, a large subsonic tunnel.

Most of the aerodynamic testing of the NASA Space Shuttle and its progenitors was done in this workhorse hypersonic facility.

A Mach 50 Wind Tunnel: The Chimera of Helium. The problem with air is that it liquefies too easily. To prevent liquefaction in a hypersonic tunnel, the air must be heated to several thousand degrees Fahrenheit.

The NASA Glenn Research Center's Hypersonic Tunnel Facility (HTF) is a blow-down, freejet wind tunnel that provides true enthalpy flight conditions for Mach numbers of 5, 6, and 7. The Hypersonic Tunnel Facility is unique due to its large scale and use of non-vitiated (clean air) : Mark R.
